Let’s talk about WHY. In my stories on Friday, I chatted to you all a little about my past and how long it took me to start working on my shopping addiction. (Saved that to the end of my highlights for those who want to watch.)
I had found an old blog post from 2009 where I expressed concern about the way I was accumulating things. And it still wasn’t until 2013 that I challenged myself to do anything it! Even after that, there were many bumps and relapses along the way. I tried so many different methods, all of which would slow my down for the time being, but none where I actually felt in control.
A big part of the shift came when I finally determined my WHY in 2015. I had just watched The True Cost documentary, and it was no longer a feeling that I should change just for the sake of changing. It was a deeper urge than just wanting. I had to change.
From there, it wasn’t exactly easy, but it became a lot easier. And now I’m able to recognize my patterns and triggers after years of practice. I kind of woke up from my unconscious decisions and made them more intentional. Analyzed my behaviors. Asked myself a lot of questions and got honest with my answers. But none of this happens overnight and I don’t want those of you working on it to get discouraged.
So I asked you, my friends, about your own WHY. And the response was overwhelming. From saving money to saving the planet to prioritizing experiences and home ownership over clothes. And there were still a few people who don’t know their WHY. That’s ok, too. Because just going through the motions and gaining control of your shopping habits may reveal something about yourself along the way.
WOW! I couldn’t believe how many of you responded to my little question box. I mean, look at this! Look who we are on this trip with. I wanted to share these responses because at times, when we struggle with overspending and over-consumption, it feels very, very isolating. But as you can clearly see, we are so far from alone. So many people out there recognizing that they can do better. And there is power in those numbers. Thank you all for sharing.
