Changing Quickly

Hello, hello, hello! Hope you have had a pleasant week. Things feel like they are really changing quickly around here. Of course, after the way this last year dragged on while simultaneously flying by, everything feels a bit out of sorts. But some sense of “normal”, so to speak, is at our fingertips. We have weekend plans again. We’re running into friends while we’re out and about. Stevie is almost done with virtual school, and anxiously awaiting in-person summer school. We are talking about travel. And yet… it’s the same old, same old. It’s good and it’s a lot. I’m trying to remember to enjoy it, and also be ok with saying when I need a slow down. The idea of balance is often lost on me — I wonder if it truly exists — and I think it’s really just constantly shifting our needs and wants as we go. So just like during the pandemic, it’s one day at a time. In a totally different way.

Cooking

The past couple weeks have been a lot of repeat meals of recent favorites. Most of the ingredients we already had on hand (don’t you love when that happens?!) so they were easy to pull together. Namely, this delicious salmon, our favorite way to eat gnocci, and these tasty tacos. We’ve also been throwing together a few salads here and there — seriously, who am I — and the dressings from this one and this one tasted so fresh and delightful.

Shopping Addiction

Most of my fashion inspo lately has come from roller skating culture. Which is fun and cute, but not exactly a good thing. It’s confusing me! And being easily influenced by a fantasy life is one of my old shopaholic patterns. I have purchased a couple of practical, matching sweatshorts sets since leggings are way too hot to skate in (still waiting for them to arrive and see how they work) but definitely have to take pause in this department. I walked into an Old Navy to find something for Stevie and all the ads hanging throughout the store showed people roller skating. *GASP* All of a sudden, I wanted it allll! Luckily (?) Stevie was having none of that. So there was no time to look and I walked away empty handed. But even after years of practice, I can see how influential shiny well-styled images are for me.

Over the years, I have experimented with any and all style categories across the board — boho, edgy, classic, preppy, granny, granola, street — and I like all of them. At least for a little while. But I already know the pieces that have longevity in my closet are going to be interesting basics. So I’m doing a lot of window shopping and swipe ups, but definitely not committing to a new personal style just yet. Not until I can skate without 10 layers of protective gear — nothing looks THAT cute with knee pads and a helmet. Haha!

Styling

These retro jersey pieces from Everlane just arrived. At first glance, I was like… nah. Or at least nah to this canvas color. Putting the hoodie and pants together felt waaay too “I’m-taking-my-cult-away-on-a-meteor” for my taste. So I debated exchanging them all for the bright orangish-pinkish sienna color. (Of course that was my roller-skate brain talking.) But as I played around to see how they mix and match with the rest of my closet, I was pleasantly surprised. I wore the pants to a BBQ yesterday, the shorts work great with a dressier spin, and the material on all of them is really nice and lightweight for summer. And just FYI, I’m in between sizes, so even though I don’t think you NEED to size up, I did just for a looser fit — the shorts/pants are a L and the hoodie is an XL. Everything is linked here!

Trying

A couple months ago, I mentioned that I was starting a new skincare routine. It has been a sloooow adjustment because I added in each product over time, as to not overwhelm my sensitive skin. And so far, I am really liking the results. Sadly I don’t look 16 again by any means, and it’s not even worth sharing a before/after, but my face feels more hydrated and healthy overall. Sometimes it’s a pain in the ass — ugh, I have to wash my face again?? But it’s also just a nice moment of care that I was ignoring before. I stole some of Stevie’s sweatbands, as recommended by @annamaegroves and that’s a great hack that’s made the routine a lot less… wet. Haha.

I will link my products here, though I have to admit, I don’t think the brand makes much difference for most of them, except the Vitamin C Serum (which I chose because it’s a whopping 12.5% active ingredient. My next choice would’ve been either Sunday Riley or SkinCeuticals, if they weren’t so expensive.) Overall, it seems to be more about the routine and using them in order consistently than the brand itself.

AM ROUTINE
Cleanser
Toner
Acne Treatment
Vitamin C Serum
Eye Cream
Moisturizer
Tinted SPF: for slight coverage | for more coverage

PM ROUTINE

Listening

I’ve been working on some roller skating playlists and while I love my 80’s rock section and my 2020’s pop section, it’s still the 90’s rap for me! Most of the songs are inappropriate for younger ears, which I have to admit, makes it all the more appealing. It’s MY time and MY music, something just for me. It’s nostalgic, sure. But I also very much enjoy the cursing and badass vibes to toughen me up.

Sipping

And on the opposite end of the specturm — not badass or tough at all — I am still digging my Haus Apéritifs as a light drink mixer. The Sampler is back in stock and it’s a great way to taste-test some different flavors. They are good over ice, but my favorite way to partake is to mix them into some sparkling water or wine. I’m a bubbly kinda girl, what can I say.

Referral + Affiliate Links

Last but not least, I have been meaning to include these links at the end of each newsletter for easy access, but keep forgetting. I could possibly be the laziest blogger in the land. Obviously no pressure to shop, but if you find something you like through my blog or IG, it’s always appreciated!

REFERRAL LINKS (Discounts for both of us!)

AFFILIATE LINKS (I make a very small commission with no additional cost to you)

Boy oh boy, this one feels like it was a packed newsletter! And that means Stevie has been on the iPad for way too long. So I will sign off here and bid you all a wonderful week ahead, good luck as it’s changing quickly! Please let me know if you have any questions.

loves,
jaana

  1. Hey, always enjoying reading what you write. I recently started using Proven skincare. Came for the custom and sunblock. Staying for the simplicity. 😉
