Boy oh boy, hot summer. It’s been a scorcher this week huh? It made me feel pretty lazy overall, and completely unprepared for many, many, many more hot summer days. But I still managed to drag myself in the ugly pool 3 days in a row and pose as “fun mom” for a little bit. Never in a million years did I envision myself being one of those ladies who doesn’t want to swim because she just washed her hair — but here we are. LOL. I powered through though, and my hair feels fried. So it is what it is. The heat also really hindered my roller skating days. I was able to get out a couple times after the sun went down, and that’s becoming my favorite time to skate now! But summer is just exhausting in general. By Thursday, I was completely pooped and took an accidental nap on the couch. Two weeks down, a thousand to go!

My no-shopping challenge starts today!! I feel ready (I think!). Once I made the decision to go for it, I started mentally preparing. So it has already begun, in a way. The last time I did a no-shopping challenge was #noshopnovember in 2019, and that was just a month long. It was pretty easy compared to my one year shopping diet of 2013-2014. And I feel like I’m in a good place mentally where this one should be just enough of a challenge to reset, without feeling super hard or frustrating. After I made the realization that no amount of clothes would fix my hatred toward being too hot in the summer, it was easy to let go of the expectation. I can definitely make do with what I have. So my motto(s) for this particular challenge? Less is more / shop that closet / repeat outfits / hot girl summer. Just kidding about the last one.
Unlearning
Yet another history lesson for me, this time about the last ship of enslaved Africans to America. This ship and horrendous conditions wasn’t so much news to me, but the story of Africatown certainly was. Another prosperous Black town on the long list that have been overtaken or destroyed.
Cooking
Not much really! Aaaah just like the good ol’ days. Haha. I actually have come to like the routine of cooking a little bit. But with the weather being so hot, I can’t bear to turn on the oven or even the air fryer. So this week was leftovers and lots and lots of melon! Some bread and cheese when we were feelin’ wild. Pieced together easy dinners. Can’t complain about that.
Wearing
You better believe if I’m getting dressed at all, it’s in some oversized shorts. And bonus points if they have an elastic waist. I don’t have to worry about my thighs sticking together, like they do when I wear skirts/dresses. The elastic waist is survival when I feel all puffy from the heat. And the breezy airflow through natural fibers not only feels good, but gives me romantic summer feelings. I’m not linking anything here for the next few months — as to not encourage impulse consumption while I’m on a spending freeze (most of my shorts are older/handmade anyway) — but you can always find something similar to what I’m wearing over on my LiketoKnow.it.
OK I’m out. Hope your week is off to a good start!
