Monochrome Monday

After the weekend we had, I knew our Monday would run into some rough patches. And I was right about that. I think we certainly can’t avoid it all together with these circumstances. But the good news is, we saw the sun and shadows today (which means some of the smoke is clearing) and we got Stevie fitted for his new glasses. They won’t be ready for a couple weeks, but he is already excited to show them off to his class on Zoom. And his beaming smile makes me smile too.

outfit details

All white, all white, all white (in my best Matthew McConaughey, LOL). Ok but seriously, when the #monthlystylechallenge prompt from @jessannkirby called for “monochrome Monday”, I knew exactly what I wanted to wear. This is the 3rd or 4th time this summer that I’ve worn all white and it still feels fresh every time. A close second would have been all black, but I’ll save some of those looks for another monochrome Monday as we transition into Fall.

anti-racism notes

One thing I will never forget was the surprise I felt reading a passage in the book Calypso by David Sedaris a couple years ago. He is hands down my favorite author and secret best friend, but that is beside the point. He wrote about a time that he was in an oyster bar with his family, and it was announced that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had been killed. He said that everyone in the restaurant began to applaud.

This really confused me. In history class I learned that MLK was a great hero. So why would anyone be happy about his death? Turns out, MLK was not a popular man during the civil rights movement. By the time of his death, he only had a 33% approval rating. So 2/3 of the country did not support what he stood for.

Here’s where it gets interesting (to me). A recent poll from the Economist showed that right now, only about 33% of the country agrees that “racism is a big problem in our country”. That’s down from 45% in June and I can’t help but think about the similarities between the civil rights movement and now. I think a small majority still support BLM, depending what polls you’re looking at, but just thought those particular numbers were an interesting cross-hair of similarity.
