One thing I love about Instagram is the connections I’ve made with like-minded women. There are so many people who I can turn to for advice or camaraderie — from special needs mamas to capsule wardrobe gurus. So I was very excited when Lo of The Capsule Closet emailed me and asked if I’d be interested in a collab with her. She had a great idea: highlight the secondhand stores in our respective areas.
Oh, so you mean I’ll actually like go out into the neighborhood and walk into thrift shops and physically GO SHOPPING?
Hmmm… not a bad idea. Actually it sounds really fun. Would be a nice break from the endless scrolling online, perusing ethical shops. And we all know by now that secondhand purchases are theee most sustainable way to shop. So yes! Let’s do it. I’ve been on the hunt for good ol’ vintage Levi’s anyway!
So over the last couple of weeks, I’ve taken time for myself while Stevie is at school to go walk the streets of Burbank, pop into thrift shops, take note of the things I love, try on a bunch of stuff, and just get back into the spirit of real life shopping.
The only problem for me? Thrifting definitely triggers behaviors of impulse buying that have taken me years to overcome. There are so many great items in the thrift shops just begging to be taken home for $5 a pop. But I still have this whole minimal wardrobe goal I’m trying to maintain. So this is like training for me. Training myself to see things from a quality perspective instead of a bargain one. Training myself to say no to things I don’t need. Training myself to stick with items that will flow with the rest of my wardrobe.
It’s definitely been a challenge. But fun nonetheless. And when I find something that’s too good to pass up — but doesn’t work for my immediate life — I can always post it to my Instagram closet sale for someone else to enjoy.
Starting next week, Lo and I will be highlighting these local shops, and by the end of the year, we’ll hopefully have compiled a nice little list of the must-see stores here in Burbank or out in LA for people visiting the areas. It’ll be great!
Who else has the thrifting bug right now?
loves,
jaana
Although I have no plans of visiting the area, I like the idea of a virtual visit to the thrift shops with you. Any time! Looking forward to the posts.
I love it! Seriously considering doing something similar for vintage shops in San Diego! My new year’s resolution was to buy more secondhand but I’ve been having trouble finding anything at my local Goodwill. I’m hoping I’ll have more luck at a vintage store where things are curated. Looking forward to seeing what Burbank has to offer 🙂
