Uh, this weekend kind of sucked. Like a lot. To be fair, Stevie has been sick for weeks, so that could be why he is really extra grouchy. And you know how difficult he is to entertain. So when you are trapped indoors with a grumpy, un-entertainable 2 year-old while daddy has to work all day, it ain’t pretty.
Saturday consisted of me trying to get the little stinker to watch a movie and just relax. While in turn, he screamed in my face because I wouldn’t take him outside. I lost my temper by 11:30am and screamed right back at him. Unfazed, he continued his antics until I could finally get him down for a fantastical 3 hour nap. Aaaaah, I just lied around the whole time. Watched TV and folded one load of laundry. That was it. So I felt refreshed and ready to take him on when he woke up.
But I still failed at keeping my cool dammit! By 4pm, I found myself locked in my bedroom, while he stood outside the door screeching like a pterodactyl. I took 5 minutes to compose myself and then gave in and took him for a walk. Which absolutely made his cough and fever worse. Of course. *head smack*
I was determined when I woke up on Sunday to have a better day. Stevie still had a fever, so I knew we’d be cooped up again. But before Paul left for work, I ran to the grocery store and bought some pool noodles. I could definitely make something fun out of these! I saw this on Pinterest, but Stevie cannot be trusted with marbles. So I just figured I’d use his plastic balls and roll them down the ramp.
Buuuuuut, as you probably guessed, it didn’t go so smooth. It was a little too difficult for him. He couldn’t quite gauge when to release the ball, so he’d miss the ramp completely and get flustered and throw the balls everywhere. Note to self: Must find something with more defined walls for it to work. Like a rain gutter! Who wants to try and convince me we need a rain gutter in our house?
After the balls were strewn about, I tried making a game out of picking them up and putting them in the bowl. “Look! So fun Stevie!” but he cried and knew it felt way too much like work/therapy.
The next set of noodles were sliced into smaller pieces. I first tried getting him to thread a piece of rope with them. “I’ll hold the rope and you put them on!” No go.
So I figured I would use them in the bathtub. “Hey Stevie! This is cool! Let’s put all these pieces in the bath!!” His response was that of a tortured soul.
Once I got them all in the bath – while he threw a fit at my feet – I thought I should get him in there as well, to cool off. This kid used to L-O-V-E, LOVE the bath. You may recall a whole blog post dedicated to it. But not as much the last month or so. He tolerated it for about 5 minutes, as long as none of the noodle pieces were touching him, and then had another meltdown.
By this point in the story it is 11am. And surely, you will understand why I love having preschool in our lives so much. Sadly, I have to keep him home until this fever is gone for at least 24 hours…
Pray for me.
I love reading your blog because its real. You write about the good, the bad, and the ugly of motherhood. We all know what a blessing it is to be parents, but I think a lot f people are afraid to admit that it’s pretty damn hard sometimes. Hope your little guy is feeling much better! Btw will you send me those pics of Van and the family ones you posted on your blog? ( 7 months later. I suck.)
Poor guy! I just told Mom how great your pics are and she and I are cracking up (more at your captions than anything else)….he’s so AWESOME. But, then I said, “Oh man. Poor kid. He’s probably so frustrated and here we are laughing at his angst.” 🙁
Prayers coming!
And my nephews love to scare my poor cats, too. 🙁
Oh Stevie!
oh man, that kid!
